Northern Ireland Conflict: Catholics and Protestants
Only several people know what is behind the bars. According to our research, it was the home of the officers that gave their lives for the sake of Northern Ireland. It is also called Long Kesh of the Maze, is located ten miles west of Belfast. It is symbolic to the struggle between the protestants and the catholics during the late 20th and 21st centuries. The prison was first opened as an internment camp in 1971. It could hold up to 1700 prisoners. The brave officers had the job that no one else would do, take all of the inhuman people inside. On the morning of August 9, 1971, the British Army invaded the Republican areas of the area and arrested 342 of the most dangerous men in the world. The point was to prevent the Irish Republican Army from operating within the city. During that time, some IRA members were captured. For example, a group of them agreed that they would not talk because they were not treated like "real" people. In those times, no one that was with the catholic side were appreciated or treated well because the catholics in those times were against the protestants meaning that they were against the United Kingdom.
